The Jewel followed normal procedures during the storm. To preserve the sails from damage, as the wind speeds increase, the crew at first used the storm sails. When the wind increased to 43 knots, they took down all the sails and ran under bare poles (i.e. no sail at all, until conditions improve). This is by far the safest thing to do.
